RANGE STATEMENT
- Inspections operational, routine, scheduled.
- Plant and attachments cutter body, drive shaft, loop and bike handles, gear box, deflectors, cutting tools, carrying straps.
- Types of deficiencies trimmer body wear or damage, cutter blade wear or damage, inadequate cutter blade lubrication, inadequate gear box lubrication, starter cord tension or wear, starting lock damage or inoperative, cooling air intake grill blocked, air filter not cleaned.
- Start stop procedures operating start and stop controls, emergency stops.
- Approved practice safety, manufacturers, organisation.
- Types of defects over running, misfiring, over heating, excessive and uncharacteristic noise, inadequate performance, vibration.
- Designated persons operative, chargehand, foreman, supervisor.
- Prescribe format job card, work slip, report sheet.
ELEMENT 1 Basic maintenance
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
| a) |
All appropriate tools, lubricants and safety equipment are in evidence. |
| b) |
Identification of the hedge trimmer make and model are made with reference to the appropriate instruction manual. |
| c) |
Nomenclature of parts and controls are accurate and are identified on the machine. |
| d) |
Body, cutter blade, cutter guard and hand guard are inspected for wear and damage and appropriate applicable action is taken. |
| e) |
Slide control, throttle trigger and safety throttle lock are checked for safe operational efficiency. |
| f) |
Cause and remedy of component problems encountered are identified with particular attention to the spark plug, air filter, starter lock lever. |
| g) |
Cleaning of all components is carried out in a safe and correct manner with specific attention to the cooling air intake grille. |
| h) |
The lubrication of the gearbox is administered according to the manufacturers handbook requirements. |
| i) |
When applicable, sharpening is carried out safely in accordance with manufacturers instructions. |
ELEMENT 2 Basic working conditions.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
| a) |
All appropriate operative safety clothing is in evidence and is used accordingly. |
| b) |
Hedge trimmer pre-start checks are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures. |
| c) |
Fuelling and starting requirements are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures. |
| d) |
Stop mechanism and starting lock are checked for correct functions. |
| e) |
The area to be cut is assessed to ensure safest cutting action is employed. |
| f) |
Correct stance is adopted to maintain minimum strain and fatigue when cutting is in operation. |
| g) |
Cutting is carried out in a safe manner. |
| h) |
Re-fuelling is carried out in a safe manner. |
| i) |
A visual inspection of the hedge trimmer to check standard manufacturers safety requirement is observed at each re-fuelling. |
| j) |
If encountered, the switching off of the engine immediately, before attempting to free the blades. |
