RANGE STATEMENT

  1. Inspections operational, routine, scheduled.
  2. Plant and attachments chain saw body, drive sprocket, bar, chain.
  3. Types of deficiencies saw body wear or damge, drive sprocket wear or damage, bar wear or damage, chain wear or damage.
  4. Start stop procedures operating start and stop controls, emergency stops.
  5. Approved practice safety, manufacturers, organisation.
  6. Types of defects over running, misfiring, overheating, excessive and uncharacteristic noise, inadequate performance, pressure cutting , sideways cutting
  7. Designated persons operatives, chargehand, foreman, supervisor.
  8. Prescribed format job card, work slip, report sheet.

ELEMENT 1 Basic maintenance and Sharpening

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

a)

All appropriate tools and safety equipment are in evidence.

b) Identification of saw make and model are made with reference to the appropriate instruction manual.
c) Chain and bar removal from saw in a safe sequence.
d) Saw body is inspected for wear or damage and appropriate action is taken.
e) Bar guide and chain gauge are identified as a suitable match.
f) Bar is inspected for wear and damage and appropriate action is taken.
g) Chain is inspected for wear and damage and appropriate action is taken.
h) Cause and remedy of component problems encountered are identified.
i) Cleaning of all components is carried out in a correct and safe manner.
j) Nomenclature of component chain parts is accurate.
k) Chain type is identified and correct diameter around the file is selected.
l) The appropriate filing angle is used and regular balanced sharpening is achieved.
m) Depth gauges and tangs are inspected and filed according to their requirements.
n) Bar and chain are re-assembled on saw body and appropriate tensioning is applied


ELEMENT 2 Basic cutting techniques ground level.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

a)

All appropriate operative safety clothing is in evidence and is used accordingly.

b) Saw pre-start checks are carried out safety in accordance with approved procedures.
c) Fuelling oiling and starting procedures are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures.
d) Chain brake function is observed to be checked as operational.
e) Movement of saw from starting point to cutting area carried out safely.
f) A top cut with pulling chain is to be carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures
g) A bottom cut with pushing chain is to be carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures.
h) A boring cut using controlled thrust is to be carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures.
i) A correct stance is adopted for each technique observed.

ELEMENT 3 Clearing fallen trees at ground level.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

a) All appropriate operative safety clothing is in evidence and is used accordingly.
b) Bar length and saw power range selection is appropriate for cutting performance required.
c) Chain selected is appropriate for cutting operation. 
d) Saw pre-start checks are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures.
e) Fuelling oiling and starting procedures are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures.
f) Check brake function is observed to be checked as operational.
g) Assessment of peripheral are requirements prior to cutting.
h) The requirements of a clear working area and safe exit line are assessed.
i) Clear safety instructions are given to any assistant on site.
j) Cutting techniques relevant to tension and pressure requirements are carried out safely and ain accordance with approved procedure
k) Re-fuelling and oiling are carried out in a safe manner.  
l) Checks for chain tension and sharpness are observed at each re-fuelling.
