ELEMENT 1 Basic maintenance
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
| a) |
All appropriate tool and safety equipment are in evidence. |
| b) |
Identification of Bench Grinder make and model are made. |
| c) |
Nomenclature of component parts is accurate. |
| d) |
Isolation of the grinder is carried out before maintenance occurs. |
| e) |
Grinder body is inspected for security of anchorage and wear or damage and appropriate action is taken. |
| f) |
Protection shields, end covers, tool rests and wheel guards are inspected for wear and damage with appropriate action being taken. |
| g) |
Cause and remedy of component problems encountered are identified. |
| h) |
Cleaning of all components is carried out in a correct manner. |
ELEMENT 2 Wheel selection and mounting.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
| a) |
Approved advisory safety literature is in evidence and is referred to. |
| b) |
Awareness of pertinent legislation appertaining to the schedule of requirements is shown. |
| c) |
Abrasive wheel characterisation and variable elements are understood. |
| d) |
BS marking system is observed to be used if wheel selection. |
| e) |
Safety in respect of examination handling storage and breaking of wheels is understood. |
| f) |
Selection of wheels is appropriate to the Grinding operation to be performed. |
| g) |
Wheel hole size is noted for appropriate flange and spindle dimension and use. |
| h) |
.Vitrified wheels are suspended vertically and ring tested with light non metallic implement for clear or dead sound. |
| i) |
Mounting of the wheel is carried out with due consideration to flange and blotters and clamping nut securing the wheel. |
| j) |
Work rest is adjusted and hand rotation of wheel is carried out. |
| k) |
Wheel is observed to be run at full operating speed with safe guard adjustment and suitable shielding. |
ELEMENT 3 Basic Grinding techniques.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
| a) |
All appropriate operative safety clothing is evidence and is used accordingly. |
| b) |
Wheel selection of appropriate grade for grinding performance required. |
| c) |
Starting procedures are carried out safely in accordance with approved practices. |
| d) |
Stop mechanisms and isolation switches are verified as being operational. |
| e) |
The requirements of a clear working area and condition of operational floor space are assessed. |
| f) |
Grinding techniques are carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures. |
| g) |
Work rest are adjusted with the machine off and isolated as and when applicable. |
| h) |
Periodic checks for glazing are carried out. |
| i) |
Truing and dressing of the wheel with the appropriate is carried out safely in accordance with approved procedures. |
